As just one of the products offered by VeriSolutions, LLC, the VeriClean system consists of a network of Bluetooth-emitting devices that interact with this mobile application to monitor and ensure the hand hygiene compliance of healthcare providers. There are over 2 million hospital-aquired infections (HAIs) annually, which individually cost hospitals over $15,000 per infection and represent a total cost to Medicaid of over $24 billion. This translates to 1 in 25 hospital patients being infected per year, resulting in over 100,000 deaths annually.
The high-level idea is that 2 bluetooth-emitting beacons are placed in each patient room that a hospital or private medical practice wishes to monitor. One is placed on the patient bed and the other is placed on the hand-washing station. When set to tracking, this mobile application detects these Bluetooth signals and logs a successful hygiene event if the provider enters a room and approaches the hand-washing station before the patient. If however, a provider approaches a patient before logging a successful hygiene event, the event is logged as a failure. The events are stored on a server to give the ability to confirm that providers are complying with hospital hand hygiene ordinances and decreasing HAIs.
Currently there is no automated method for collecting this information that is as passive as this system. This application allows any healthcare institution to ensure the safety of their patients without disrupting provider workflow simply by having the members of their staff login and push a button. With the enriched knowledge provided by this app, both hospitals and private practices can confidently ensure that their patients are given world-class care.
